Pros
Cons
1. Google Tensor G3
I’ve been impressed by how responsive the Pixel 8 is with its Google Tensor G3 chip. Everything runs smoothly without any noticeable slowdowns, whether jumping between apps, watching videos, or using the camera.
But I wouldn’t call it the most powerful chip out there. If you're just using your phone for browsing, messaging, and the occasional photo or video, the Tensor G3 feels more than adequate. Heavy gaming and intensive tasks don’t feel like the phone's main purpose.
2. Camera
The Pixel 8's camera is a highlight, but it’s not perfect for everyone. For my needs, it takes fantastic photos, especially when capturing details with the 50MP sensor. The ultrawide lens is handy, but I wish there was more flexibility, like a telephoto lens for zoom shots.
One feature I’ve really come to appreciate is "Best Take." It’s handy when capturing moving subjects. It allows you to pick the sharpest image from a burst shot. The only gripe I have is the camera UI—it’s not as intuitive as I’d like, and it takes some getting used to.
3. Battery Life
One of my biggest concerns with any smartphone is battery life. Thankfully, the Pixel 8 lasts me about 1.5 days on moderate use. Even with the 120Hz display, I don’t find myself scrambling for a charger by the end of the day.
The 27W wired charging gets me back to 50% in about 30 minutes, which is fast enough for my needs. The reverse wireless charging feature has been surprisingly useful for charging earbuds on the go.
4. Size and Design
I’ve used larger phones in the past, and while they have their perks, the Pixel 8 feels just right. At 6.2 inches, it’s compact enough for one-handed use, yet large enough to enjoy media content comfortably. The build feels sturdy with its Gorilla Glass Victus protection.
The IP68 water resistance is a nice touch, too. I don’t use my phone for underwater photography, but it’s good to know it can survive a splash.
5. Software
Android 14 on the Pixel 8 is a joy to use. Google’s take on Android feels polished, with little features that make life easier. The "At a Glance" widget is more useful than I thought, giving me relevant information like calendar events or commute times right when I need it.
The software updates are frequent, which is generally a good thing, but there have been a couple of times when updates changed settings without warning.
Overall, the Google Pixel 8 has been a reliable, everyday phone for me. Its size, performance, and battery life make it perfect for daily tasks like messaging, browsing, and casual photography. While it’s not packed with every feature under the sun, the things it does, it does well.
If you’re looking for a phone that fits comfortably in your hand, performs well in daily tasks, and offers a well-rounded camera setup, the Pixel 8 is worth considering.
